Faulty Spark Plugs

Worn out or old spark plugs can cause engine sputtering and other ignition issues. Spark plugs are important to ignite the fuel once it is inside the engine. Partial ignition can lead to leftover fuel in the engine and cause misfires.

Bad Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is responsible for removing trace amounts of dirty or debris from your fuel - which can cause engine to run irregularly. A bad or old fuel filter can result in lower fuel pressure or even a clogged fuel injector. A drop in fuel pressure outside the normal operation range can cause engine sputtering.

Replacing the fuel filter should be part of your vehicles routine maintenance cycle. It is also relatively easy to replace and doesn't cost much. If you suspect that the fuel filter old then let your mechanic know so they can be sure to replace it during your next maintenance visit.

Fuel Pump Issues

Issues with the fuel pump can also directly impact your fuel pressure, potentially lowering it to the point where your engine might not start. Your trusted mechanic should be able to diagnose a faulty fuel pump and replace it with a new one easily.

Dirty Fuel Injectors

The fuel injectors are responsible for adding the fuel to the combustion chamber. The fuel is then mixed with air and ignited by the spark plugs. Dirty or bad fuel injectors result in non-ideal fuel amounts inside your engine's ignition chamber. If the fuel amount in the chamber is too low the engine will not fire properly and this could result in sputtering.

Faulty Catalytic Converters

Believe it or not, a bad or blocked catalytic converters can also cause engine sputtering. The catalytic converter works by filtering out harmful emissions from your exhaust. If it becomes blocked or partially clogged it can result in a build-up in pressure in your exhaust system. This back pressure can cause engine sputtering.

Faulty Oxygen (O2) Sensors

Cars control the amount of oxygen - a vital part of the combustion cycle - inside your engine's combustion chambers. Issues with oxygen sensors can throw off the proper mixture and result in the gas/air mixture to be either too rich or too lean. When this happens your gas engine will often sputter or behave abnormally.
